Word Wall Reveal

Well school has officially begun here in Texas and it is wonderful to get my family back on schedule and my new little class of cuties into routine. This year I am girl heavy with 9 girls and 5 boys. They are a wonderful group of 4 year olds and I can't wait to get to know them better. I have one student yet to meet who should arrive in the morning but otherwise my group is energetic, full of life and typical four year olds with a love of learning and for the Lord. The families I am working with have done an excellent job with these little guys. So far we have practiced our procedures, learned how to properly play in centers, used our crayons, markers and pencils with success and had fun getting to know each other. Tommorrow each of my kiddos will get their chance to add their name to my new word wall that is why I am revealing it to you today! Since my classroom is also a Sunday school room I have some restrictions on what I am allowed to do, this being said I have gotten somewhat creative in making sure my room has everything it needs for school. Drum roll please........
Here it is, all bright and colorful just waiting for words and names to be displayed and studied! I made this word wall with animals so that the visuals and first words would be familiar to the children. It is a very simple black frame printed on bright paper then laminated. I attached the animal and word before laminating since I knew that is what I wanted. This display had to be placed on my cabinets towards the back of the room and out of reach of children due to my restrictions. However I am going to allow the children to carefully use the stepstool to add their names and then I will add the rest of the words from then on. I should mention that all the words will have a picture since this is a Pre-K word wall. Their name plates will alo have a picture of them. Hence why I had to reveal this without words on it.
Hanging the pieces for this word wall on cabinets had its challenges. First there is no true center to place the header, oh well I will just have to live with that. Then there are the handles which I carefully cut as little as possible off the letter card. But the hardest was figuring out how to open the cabinets with this word wall covering the doors. I carefully used a razor blade to slice down the cards that needed to be cut then moved the smaller piece over just a touch so the doors would open with ease. You can see that until you are right up near it you would never know I had done this. I also have a half a roll of mavelous tape (yes, that is spelled correctly)to thank for holding these cards up without damage to the cabinet facing. All in all I am very pleased with how this has turned outy, ideally I would place it a the childrens eye level but this will have to be good enough for this year. To get a copy of this word wall for $1.50 visit my TpT store using this link: SIMPLE WORD WALL TPT And be on the lookout for my set of picture vocabulary word cards to use with this word wall and for many other activities. I should have them posted this weekend. Till next time, Christine

  1. I LOVE picture based word walls! I had a "typical" wall up for half the year last year and NOBODY used it. I switched to pictures and the kids wouldn't stop using it! I like the idea of adding their names and pictures. I'm your newest follower!

Sight word freebie, ideas and more Dyslexia Worksheets!

Hello All, Today we had so much fun with our sight word from my freebie Snowflake Slap . First I laid out all of the snowflakes on the carpet. If the child could read me the word they could keep the card and crumple it into a snowball. Once all of the words were read and squished I told the class we could have a snowball fight! It was such great fun that we took our "snowballs" into another kinder classroom and attacked them. As the kids threw the sight word snowballs we made more snowballs and threw them into the crowd from leftover paper. It was great fun! Once we settled back into our classroom we placed all of the snowballs into a bucket and each child pulled a word. If they could read it they recorded it on the left side of the worksheet below, if they couldn't read the word they recorded it on the right. The ones most did not know were pretty consistent so I know which ones we need the most work on. So hop on over the TpT to grab your free copy of Snowflake Slap an...

Animal and habitat teaching ideas for pre-k and a freebie!

O.K. so we all remember those famous dioramas that we made in elementary school were meant to teach us about animals and where they live. While these are cute projects with a purpose they are best suited for elementary students not pre-k. But with curious minds and a natural love for animals it only makes sense to introduce our kiddos to facts about animals and where they live around the world. For pre-k there are so many great easy ways to incorporate animals into our classrooms. I like to make animal masks for each habitat we are working on as well as read the room cards and recording sheets. The kiddos can record the name of the animal by reading it on the other childs mask. My class also enjoys making animals out of construction paper and gluing some facts that I have typed and printed about the animals. I like to try to decorate my room to mimic the habitat we are working on, I have to say I am a huge stuffed animal collector so I have many of the animals needed in beany baby size...

Differentiated Read the Room: Ideas for learning and a freebie!

Read the room is an excellent center activity! I use read the room almost daily in my classroom for literacy, vocabulary, letter recognition, spelling patterns and much more! I have created a bundle of read the room activities that are differentiated in order to meet the needs of all of your students no matter what level they are on. I am a firm believer in making my classroom an environment where all children are successful and feel confident in their learning. Differentiation is just one way to help those children who may be behind or even ahead to grow and flourish in the classroom. The goal is the same: learning, irregardless of where we start we want children to learn at a pace that does not frustrate and overwhelm.      My Differentiated Read the Room Files contain 3 sets of picture cards. One set has the entire word printed with the picture, the 2nd set only has the target vowel written under the picture and the 3rd set only ...
