Tips and techniques for implementing The Daily 5 for reading groups in a pre-k classroom

So, you want to use the Daily 5 with your 4 year olds but you are not quite sure how you are going to get them ready or if they can even do it. I can tell you after implementing the Daily 5 in my Pre-K classroom for the past 3 years I am confident that not only can you teach it but they can accomplish it! Not sure what the Daily 5 is? You will want to get your hands on the book "The Daily 5" by: Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. My school used this book and accompanying videos as a professional development study three years ago and my classroom has never been the same. Tailored to elementary students who can already read I had to tweak it to meet my classrooms needs. I wait until the class is acclimated to school before even thinking of teaching the 5 areas of the Daily Five. Each day the children are supposed to: Read to self, Word Work, Read to someone, Listen to reading and Meet with the teacher. I always start with teaching read to self. I have the whole class bring one book t...

Tablet time, word families and a new freebie!

So, we all know little ones these days love technology but we can't afford to put an ipad in each childs hand for school. As much as I wish we could it is just not feasable for most schools. While a classroom might have 1 or 2 tablets that is just not enough for a class of 20+, so I have decided to fake it! For my four year olds this year we will be studying our word families on "tablets" printed on cardstock. I have used a tablet graphic copyrighted by scrappindoodles.com to create word family posters, worksheets and word work centers. I have also used this graphic to create a beginning sounds unit, multi-sensory ABC mats, and am currently working on EIOU word families and numbers. I have printed the first set of "tablets" and my 5 year old has not stopped playing with them. He even used a blank sheet that I have provided and made his own word family tablet: It is a litle hard to see that he has written the name of each picture in pencil on the page as well. I...

Organization for differentiation and a huge giveaway!

In my quest to get organized for next year I have devised a system for differrentiation that I believe will work for me and my kiddos. (If you know me this is a huge step, I am a very disorganized ADHD person!) I am calling this series of blog posts "Organization for Differentiation." I hope you can gleam some insight and share some of your experiences along the way. Also, to kick off this series I will be giving away the biggest piece of the puzzle for me, the drawer tower! This is a $50.00 piece and I will have it sent straight from Amazon to the winner! See the pictures and make sure to enter the giveaway at the end of this post. So, here is the first step for "Organtization for Differentiation" The Tools: 2 drawer towers, dollar store drawer organizers, target dollar spot book bins and center supplies. This is in the very beginning staes and I will be updating you every step of the way. So to begin I have started by deciding what type of books I want on each c...

Organizing letter tiles for word work!

If you are like me you have probably had a bucket full of letter tiles for the kids to sort through during word work. Well, I am done with my disorganized bucket and have figured out a system to help. Once again I have hit the Target dollar spot and found exactly what I needed. I would think you could also pick up these items at a Dollar Store or Walmart. I purchased 2 coupon files with 13 pockets each (yeah!nobody has to share a pocket!). I purposly chose 2 different colors so that it would be easier to put letters back after use. I labeled the front and back of both coupon files and each tab inside with one letter. I also purchased two sets of hamburger holders in the Target Dollar Spot, these came in groups of 3, so 6 for $2.00. I used one of each color that matches the colors of the coupon files for "lost letters." The students that are not as capable of placing the letters back into the correct pocket can place the letter tiles in the lost letter bucket and the teach...

New Word Wall! Yippy!

Hello All, Yeah! Today was the first time I had access to me room since the beginning of June!I spent most of my day in porfessional development but I was able to find enough time at the end of the day to hang up me new word wall. I am so excited to be able to put this up and keep it up all year. It goes with my jungle theme and fits perfectly just where I wanted it!!!! I am so pleased with how this turned out, we are only allowed to use mavelous tape on our walls so that is the tape you see around the edges. It is also holding individual cards behind and sticks well to the laminating. You can find this word wall in my TpT store, use the TpT link on the right. Along with the word wall this file includes ABC flash cards, word cards (dolche pre-primer and primer) and an ABC booklet for the children to glue and write their word wall words into. The importance of teaching decoding in early reading!

So yesturday I went with my 3rd grader to the Maybourn Museum on the Baylor University campus, this is a very nice museum and worth the trip if you live within a couple of hours of Waco TX. While going through our guided tour I came across this sign on the wall. I could read it without trouble but it got me thinking about a few things. My first thought was "Is this what it looks like to try to read as a young child, just a bunch of letters with no meaning?" My second thought was "Is this similar to what text looks like to children with dyslexia and dysgraphia and other learning disabilities?" Granted I know that dyslexics reverse letters and dysgraphics flip their letters but I am just thinking of the confusion these issues would cause during the crucuial points in which we learn to read as children. So, this is when I got to thinking about the importance of decoding words and letter/sound recognition. Without these two skills even reading this jumb...

ABC Letter Finds and Word Work Ideas!

Here I have created a set of 26 ABC worksheets to go with my Scrabble Spelling Unit on TpT. I will post several of these for free on the freebies page for you to download and print out. More ideas are included below the pictures for your Word Work station. You can get the entire set by clicking the link below which will redirect you to my TpT store. Enjoy! ABC Letter Find Unit Each of these worksheets can be used for visual discrimination assessment, letter knowledge and following directions. I always do the first couple as a group and then once the class gets the hang of them I allow them to be done on thier own. I can then take a few minutes to work with those that need some extra practice on letters. In my word work center I have scrabble tiles that I have gathered from old games at garage sales etc. The class can use them to build the sample words on the worksheet, can be challenged to make other words that have the key letter ...

Reading Group Centers: Organization ideas, procedures and practicality!

I finally have pictures of my new reading group setup. I have completly rearranged my classroom for the second half of the year in order to put my new system into place. Because my school requires I put everything into cabinets at the end of the week (we share our classrooms with the church) my system had to be portable and storage friendly. I purchased 2 towers with 10 drawers each. Everything else I already owned. Picture 1.: The back corner of my room houses the two towers, they are filled with quiet centers such as letter and number stencils, wiki sticks with ABC mats, pop beads, stringing beads and more. Picture 2: Closeup of same area Picture 3: Early reader buckets, classification center, word work tiles, Popcorn words (Unit found on TpT) and a bucket with the students handwriting workbooks.  Picture 4: Classification center with letter and word tiles for word work. This is a standing center that allows movement and keeps ctudents from having to sit for ...
