Tips for Teaching Number Word Recognition

We all know that teaching number words can be a challenge, not only do most of them require memorization but the connection between the word and number can be a challenge for young children. Here are some tips to making your instruction of number words more successful.

1. Display large number cards that have the number word on each. These were a free set from 1-30 I found on teacherspayteachers.com, they are perfect for my jungle theme. (8.5x11)
2. Use cards with the number word only and flash them as you count. Practice this every morning during your number word recognition unit.

3. Create or find a center that practices matching the number to its word. Here is the one i am using right now and the children just love it! They are having so much success using this unit and being able to check their answers against the large number cards i have hanging on the wall. You can find this center in my Insect Invasion Unit. 4. Use a cut and paste activity to match the word to its number. My class worked for 20 minutes silently on this, the cutting and pasting was fun for them and they had to concentrate on placing the correct number owrd right next to the number. I was so proud of them! This is available in my Frog Fun Unit on TpT: Click this link to view: Frog-Fun-Math-Centers

5. Use a read the room activity to write the number words next to the correct number. Instruct the children to count the objects on the cards, then write the word on the recording sheet. My class especially enjoys read the room this year, I am using it in many different ways, this particular set of cards from 1-50 is available in my Frog Fun unit onTpT, click this link to view: Frog-Fun-Math-Centers

I hope these tips and resources are helpful to your instruction.
Till next time,

  1. These are great tips!

Thank you so much for sharing! Your blog is an inspiration! =)

Have you ever heard of Conscious Discipline? I would love for you to come read about it if you get the chance. It is amazing. It is all about building the School Family but it also shares ways to help young children with things like controlling their anger and making choices. My recent post is about making choices. =)

Thank you for all you do and share.

  2. Thanks for coming by.

I do teach my kiddos about obeying quickly and that there are times you do not get choices. Conscious Discipline is actually used in many Head Start programs and in the 3 year old program in several districts that are all at-risk kiddos. It does work and I agree completely that there are times when safety has to be first and the kiddos know this. Choices do help as children are learning to become more independent. Classroom management is different in a pre-K, K, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade classroom and that is one of the reasons I don't teach the really big kiddos! =)

I am glad I found your blog and will stop by often. I am going to share it with the pre-K teachers in my district because it is wonderful and will provide them with lots of great ideas and resources. =)

  3. Oops! I also meant to say I agree with you about letting a child win an argument and I don't because you are so right that others will then try it too! It is a fine line between choices and obedience the first time. And like I said, there are still times I struggle with things. It is when the kiddos are moving into their brain stem and shutting down that often giving 2 positive choices helps.

Thank you for sharing because you helped me realize I need to share this point next time I blog! =)

Sight word freebie, ideas and more Dyslexia Worksheets!

Hello All, Today we had so much fun with our sight word from my freebie Snowflake Slap . First I laid out all of the snowflakes on the carpet. If the child could read me the word they could keep the card and crumple it into a snowball. Once all of the words were read and squished I told the class we could have a snowball fight! It was such great fun that we took our "snowballs" into another kinder classroom and attacked them. As the kids threw the sight word snowballs we made more snowballs and threw them into the crowd from leftover paper. It was great fun! Once we settled back into our classroom we placed all of the snowballs into a bucket and each child pulled a word. If they could read it they recorded it on the left side of the worksheet below, if they couldn't read the word they recorded it on the right. The ones most did not know were pretty consistent so I know which ones we need the most work on. So hop on over the TpT to grab your free copy of Snowflake Slap an...

Animal and habitat teaching ideas for pre-k and a freebie!

O.K. so we all remember those famous dioramas that we made in elementary school were meant to teach us about animals and where they live. While these are cute projects with a purpose they are best suited for elementary students not pre-k. But with curious minds and a natural love for animals it only makes sense to introduce our kiddos to facts about animals and where they live around the world. For pre-k there are so many great easy ways to incorporate animals into our classrooms. I like to make animal masks for each habitat we are working on as well as read the room cards and recording sheets. The kiddos can record the name of the animal by reading it on the other childs mask. My class also enjoys making animals out of construction paper and gluing some facts that I have typed and printed about the animals. I like to try to decorate my room to mimic the habitat we are working on, I have to say I am a huge stuffed animal collector so I have many of the animals needed in beany baby size...

The Story of Creation Flip Book Freebie!

As many of you already know I am a Christian school teacher in a small private school. I have decided to start making my Bible craftivities into files for others to access for their own Christian classrooms or homeschools. I have just finished putting together my first file for a Creation Flip Book and it is listed for free on TpT. The file includes full picture instructions as well as an option for color or black and white. Throughout this year I plan to list each Bible story craftrivity I do in my classroom and then bundle them at the end of the year. I am also working on a God's Journal, similar to the poetry and math journals you see so often in classrooms theses days but this one will celebrate our faith. I would appreciate your feedback after downloading the file and sharing this with other believers. Please take a minute to follow me here on my blog and hop on over to TpT to get your free flip book file. While you are there please check out my other items and follow my store...
